This is a New IH Tractor Pinion shaft setting tool.
This tool is used to set the proper depth of the pinon shaft/gear into the differential ring gear. The tool cross bar is set in place in the differential carrier bores and held in place with the long carriage bolts. The machined plug fits into the end of the pinion gear. There is a setting number engraved in the end of the pinion gear. This number will correspond to the distance that must be obtained (using a shim pack) between the setting tool cross bar and the plug in the end of the pinion gear. There is a chart provided with the tool and also the chart is found in a IH service manual or IT manual. Using this chart with the number on the end of the pinion gear the distance between the tool cross bar and the plug is given. A drawing is provided for a visual explanation. A tip sheet is also included with the tool. This is the exact same tool that the IH service manual says to use when setting the pinion shaft. Without this tool it is nearly impossible to get the pinion depth set correctly.
