IHC’s Torque Amplifiers were a Revolution in Transmissions
When they first came out in 1954, IHC’s torque amplifiers marked a revolution in transmission engineering. Available on most high-horsepower IH tractors, they allowed farmers to shift the tractor between two gears, not only on the go, but also under load – without using the tractor’s clutch or regulating engine speed.
Advantages of Better Pulling Offered by IH Torque Amplifiers
Farmers hugely benefited from IH torque amplifiers, particularly when tilling. They could shift a tractor down, and generate more draft – an invaluable aid when dealing with a tough spot in the field. When the tractor was shifted from direct drive to torque amplification, the travel speed of the tractor slowed down significantly, which is helpful when turning at the end of a field. This allowed for increased pulling ability (nearly 50% or more).
